Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for Propoven

On May 8, 2020, FDA issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) permitting the emergency use of the unapproved product, Fresenius Propoven 2% (propofol 20 mg/mL) Emulsion 100 mL, to maintain sedation via continuous infusion in patients older than 16 years of age who require mechanical ventilation in an intensive care unit (ICU) setting during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Because Fresenius Propoven 2% (propofol 20 mg/mL) Emulsion has a concentration twice that of the FDA-approved propofol product, there is a risk of unintentional overdose. There are also important differences in the formulation and labeling between the two products. Healthcare providers should review the EUA and the differences between the two products prior to administering Propoven. Documents related to the EUA can be found here, including the most recent letter of authorization, a fact sheet on the EUA for healthcare providers, and a wall chart outlining the key differences between the two products.

Drug Shortages Database RSS Feed to be Discontinued

Special Announcement

ASHP currently enables easy access of its Drug Shortages Database information through RSS (“really simple syndication”) feeds. Effective December 31, 2019, ASHP will discontinue the RSS feed. Anyone who is not an ASHP member and who uses the Drug Shortages RSS feeds commercially to populate a third-party application or database will need to complete a short survey so that ASHP may follow up with you with a license agreement and provide instructions for accessing the new API. Access to drug shortages information will continue as a member benefit via the Drug Shortages Resource Center on ASHP’s website and also through ASHP’s AHFS Clinical Drug Information web and mobile applications

New Report Shows Impact of Rising Drug Prices and Drug Shortages on Patients and Hospitals

Today, the American Hospital Association (AHA), the Federation of American Hospitals (FAH), and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) released a new report finding that continued rising drug prices, as well as shortages for many critical medications, are impacting patient care and putting strains on hospital budgets and operations. The report was prepared based on analysis conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago, an independent research institution. See the full press release.
